The Health Committee of Cuba's National Assembly oversees and monitors, through its members, all aspects of HIV/AIDS in the country on a biannual basis. It scrutinizes morbidity and mortality indicators for the disease, visits hospitals, sanatoriums and dispensaries, and checks that all patients have access free of charge to antiretroviral treatment. |
| Membership |
Committee members are designated by each of the country's five provinces and serve for 5 years, monitoring all of the above aspects. The results are discussed in plenary committee meetings. |
| Working methods |
Annual visits to monitor in particular the quality of care dispensed and public parliamentary hearings on HIV/AIDS.
Fact-finding missions, inter-parliamentary meetings in Latin America and the Caribbean convened by the Latin American Parliament, hearings of government officials as required, public advocacy via the media.

| Relations with other parliamentary bodies |
The Health Committee works with other parliamentary committees, such as the Education, Science and Technology Committee and the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, to obtain an overall view of the subject.
Inter-parliamentary conferences have been organized in the Latin American Parliament and the subject has been discussed at bilateral parliamentary meetings between Cuba and Mexico, Venezuela and Panama.
Through its Health Commission, the Latin American Parliament provides guidelines on how to tackle HIV /AIDS from the legislative point of view.

| Relations with external bodies |
The Health Committee is in contact with Cuba's Health Ministry and the State Secretariat for Hygiene and Epidemiology, which is responsible for HIV /AIDS matters, with non-governmental organizations such as the Cuban Women's Federation, youth and press organizations, and with the WHO/PAHO office in Cuba. |
